Cvictus was invited to present our recent paper titled CO2 Sequestration in deep coal seams – turning coal ‘from a source to a sink’ of CO2 at the 17th Greenhouse Gas Control Technology Conference (GHGT-17) in Calgary, Alberta. GHGT-17 is the premier international conference on greenhouse gas reduction technologies, with a specific focus on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). The GHGT conference series has been at the forefront of advancing low-carbon solutions to combat climate change.
Following relevant and engaging keynotes from Jarad Daniels (Chief Executive Officer, Global CCS Institute), Mary Burce Warlick (Deputy Executive Director, International Energy Agency), Myles Allen (Professor of Geosystem Science, Head of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics, Oxford University) our Director of Carbon Conversion, Katrina Stewart, presented an overview of the potential of deep coals as new sinks for carbon sequestration in the Case Studies portion of the technical talks.
The presentation and paper covers the landscape of CO2 injection into coal including work done by Cvictus and University of Calgary in support of our Enhanced Hydrogen Recovery™ (EHR™) technology. Notably, our 2022 CO2 injection tests and modelling results that demonstrate that deep coals can be a permanent sequestration target for large volumes of CO2. Recent internal work on the global resource potential with suitable geology for EHR™ was also shared publicly for the first time – conservatively estimating 30-50 trillion tonnes of suitable resources, opening the door for potentially trillions of tonnes of NEW CO2 sequestration capacity around the world.
